Celebrating 350 years of serving God in the Stony Stratford area
On Sunday 29th April 2007, over three hundred people gathered for 2 special services marking the 350th anniversary of Stony Stratford Baptist Church including guest speaker Revd David Coffey, President of the Baptist World Alliance.
The church was founded in 1657 during the Commonwealth of Oliver Cromwell, a time when there was religious liberty and freedom to worship. With the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, Baptists experienced formidable opposition to their faith. On occasions worshippers in Stony Stratford had to escape through the window which is now hanging in the church porch.
Much has changed since the 1600s but there is still a vibrant community of people who meet together on Sundays and throughout the week. The church runs a variety of programmes and activities, which are tailored to meet the different needs of its members and the local community. It is a place where everyone can feel at home, make new friends, chat and discuss, gain support at difficult times, and enjoy God's presence in their wider lives.
Commenting on the celebrations, Revd Jacqui Green said, "We have had a wonderful time celebrating with friends past and present the faithfulness of God over 350 years. But most importantly the weekend has given fresh impetus to our Mission - our local community need to experience the Good News of Jesus Christ as much today as they did when the church was founded in 1657."
